One key reason for the success of the Towers is its excellent staff. Developing a cadre of committed, cheerful, and courteous employees is the result of Management's hiring practices, training procedures, and climate of mutual respect.
We place special emphasis on the hiring of competent employees. Like any employer, we pay attention to previous experience and credentials. An example of this attention can be seen in the fact that our security staff is composed of former police officers with ranks of lieutenant and captain. But we also look for sensitivity, warmth, and refinement. We ask: Is this prospective employee the kind of person who understands that residents appreciate a friendly greeting? Will he or she fit into the family feeling we have engendered here?
After they are hired, our employees receive excellent training and supervision. Each member of the staff receives a written job description and, in some cases, detailed manuals. Management arranges for seminars on specific subjects, such as responding to bomb threats. An important part of their training and supervision is an ongoing program of incentives and rewards for outstanding performance--employee-of-the-year awards, membership in the Milestone Club, holiday lunches, and the voluntary annual holiday fund donated by residents. The fact that the amount given by residents to this fund more than doubled in the past few years is a clue as to the high regard residents have for Towers employees.
Towers employees form a kind of familial relationship with Management and residents. We care about them as people. They care about Towers residents the same way. During the great snow storms of 1996, most of the Towers employees arrived at work--some under conditions of considerable hardship--because they knew that people at the Towers needed them, a record not duplicated at any comparable building in the area.
Unlike the garages of nearby condominiums, our garage staff are Society Hill Towers employees, not employees of an outside garage management company. The experience of Management has been that outside garage staff members are impersonal and relatively indifferent to the needs of residents who park in the garage.
