How We've Succeeded!

Bill #01065 - Trash Removal Bill

The City removes trash from all single-family residences but does not pick up trash from Society Hill Towers and other condominiums.  SHTC PAC was instrumental in the introduction of Bill #01065, sponsored by Councilmen DiCicco, Cohen and Kenney, requiring that the city pick up trash from condominiums.  The bill was passed unanimously by City Council in June 2002; Mayor Street allowed the bill to become law but refused to implement it.  PAC supported City Council in the move to sue the Mayor for non-compliance, and Common Pleas Judge Carrafiello ruled against the Mayor.  As of May 2009, the city has not implemented trash collection at condominiums but we are in discussions with City Council members and Mayor Nutter about receiving reimbursement for our waste removal costs.  Stay tuned.

Bill #629 - Billboard Bill

PAC testified and demonstrated against this bill, which would have denied civic groups the right to appeal Zoning Board rulings. We succeeded, as this bill was defeated.

Other Activities - the PAC:

·       Facilitates voter registration form distribution

·       Performed a pulse survey of residents in 2008

·       Hosts candidate forums

·       Sponsors interesting and entertaining events - such as the September 2008 event with Councilmen Green, Goode and Rizzo

·       Meets regularly with local elected officials

·       Is working in support of an initiative to make Spruce Street 2-way from the garage exit to Front Street, so that vehicles exiting the garage may turn either left or right

·       Is tracking developments regarding property tax increases and sharing residents' concerns with City Council members and the Mayor
